Guatemala 2024 Day Nine
Written By: Adeleecia
Hello hello, Happy (Canadian) Mother’s Day! Adeleecia here :)
Can’t believe this is our last full day in Guatemala! It has been a very blessed week. We were able to sleep in a little bit, however we did wake up to quaking as there was an earthquake between Mexico and Guatemala. Or it could’ve been Kathryn shaking our beds. Once we fully woke up, we had breakfast on the roof, enjoying our view for a final time.
After eating, we quickly jumped into doing some errands around the house. The early afternoon was a loooot of painting. Half of us painted parts of the roof, while the other half painted the bathroom. Don’t worry, we did remember to stay hydrated and use LOTS of sunscreen. We had a short intermission as one of the students mom had stopped by to thank us for what we did this week. She gave each of us a beautiful handmade table centrepiece.
Once we got majority of our work done, we got ready to go get some incredible tacos for lunch. Canada’s ain’t got nothing on these tacos. After enjoying some laughs, and watching a jumping spider do parkour on the napkins (Kathryn was NOT pleased), we made our way to a grocery store to do some shopping. Our shopping mainly consisted of snacks, coffee (Kathryn was VERY pleased), and some dish soap that works wonders.
After our shopping excursion, we had to get ready for church. That’s definitely something to get used to, church at 4 in the afternoon! We were welcomed with very warm greetings and smiles. The worship was very very well done. They even included the English version of Open the Eyes to my Heart. With some translation help from Barb, our sermon was about “What is a True Believer.” It covered the passages 1 John 2:3-11, John 15:5, and John 13:34. In John 13:34, it is a command to love others like He has loved us. How you cannot love God but hate people. And in John 15:5, it was the parable of the branch and the vine. How if we remain in Him, we will bear much fruit. If we do not, our branches will be withered and thrown away.
Towards the end of the service, we had 2 students who attend Alpha accept Jesus into their hearts. It was incredible seeing the two of them go up to the front of the stage and declare their love for him. Honestly, the whole service had a lot of emotions buzzing around. The pastor had called Barb and Kathryn up to say some words before closing off the service.
We then had some snacks that were prepared just outside of the church, made our way back, and are currently packing away our luggages!
We will be finishing our last night with devotions, handing out some last gifts, saying our final farewells, and heading to sleep as we gotta be up super early.
There will be one more blog from all of us as we are travelling back to Canada. Thanks for staying with us this whole time! We look forward to returning.
