Dominican Republic 2024 Day Six
Hey guys, today was a really fun but hard-working day. We got to work on the compound where we are currently staying which was a nice change from working in the village previously. We started off the day with breakfast, some fun ham with melted cheese along with toast, cereal, and fruit.
After breakfast we got changed and prepared for work in the compound on the concrete bleachers. To do so we went to the back of the compound to get “blue sand” and put it in wheel barrels and rolled them up this massive steep hill to the bleachers, while others were gathering tools, and concrete powder. After that we made concrete ourselves (the manual way) without the concrete mixer. We started off by putting all the sand in a pile, then adding concrete powder on top and mixing with water in a timely manner.
The short walk to lunch was a great change today, where we had sloppy joes, rice, and salad! Prepared by the great and loving kitchen staff. Then we got back to work and made an assembly line passing buckets of concrete to one another, until it was poured under the bleachers by a Lighthouse staff member. For some sections of the bleachers, we had to level out the ground beforehand, which took a couple rounds of wheel barrels with a dirt/gravel mix. That way we would not waste as much concrete and resources. Today was a great day because we had an amazing opportunity to really work as a team during the assembly line and constantly supporting one another in different roles throughout the day.
After a quick break due to a big rainstorm, we got back to work and was able to finish up the big job just before dinner time with 25 minutes to spare! For dinner we had some funky ham and it was delicious. Alongside we got treated with some amazing smashed potatoes and these really great cinnamon rolls that someone on the team may have eaten 7 of (which the leaders were clearly unaware of until now).
Later that night, after dinner we had devotions where we talked about the fruit of the spirit. Devotionals have been an excellent time to dive into Gods word and grow together spiritually as a team.
After devotions, one of our leaders was spooked by the biggest tarantula any of us have ever seen in our lives just a few feet where we ended off our devotional. We thought it was fake at first with how still it was so we tossed some sunscreen at it and it moved! Then we proceeded to move it away from our area and it went for a fun swim in our pool where it swam to the deep end and drowned. Currently it is in the pool hopefully tomorrow morning we will never see it again lol.
Until next time,
Jacob, Noah, & Matthew
